Queen's Award for Enterprise 2013
It is the second time that Shared Interest has received the
coveted Queen's Award in the Sustainable Development category.
Managing Director Patricia Alexander says: "Being approved for a
Queen's Award for Enterprise in Sustainable Development for the
second time running makes this a very special honour.
"Since winning the award for the first time in 2008, we have
increased our overseas offices to four; adding one in Peru and
another in West Africa. We also managed to reach many more
disadvantaged communities as direct loans to handcrafters and
smallholder farmers have increased by 83%.
"Shared Interest focuses on trade rather than aid with the aim
of empowering communities to help themselves."
Research shows that the world's 450 million smallholder farmers
occupy an increasingly important part of the global food supply
chain, providing 70% of the world's food. (Source: Fairtrade
Foundation, February 2013) However, only 2% of their financing
needs are currently being met in the developing world and
smallholder farmers represent 50% of the world's hungriest people.

Patricia continued: "This award is a tremendous accolade and
demonstrates the commitment of our supporters -including staff,
investors and volunteers - in the sustainable development of fair
trade businesses in disadvantaged communities worldwide."
