East Africa Governance And Finance Project

EAST AFRICA GOVERNANCE AND FINANCE PROJECT

In May 2018 we launched our East Africa Governance and Finance Training project. This two year project supported 20 producer organisations across Kenya and Uganda to increase their productivity, sustainability and capacity to access finance. Through group training sessions and 1-2-1 mentoring we addressed the individual issues facing each organisation. Topics covered include Board roles and responsibilities, the local operating environment and risk management.

Case study

Pink Foods, a cocoa producer in Uganda are one of 20 co-operatives we are supporting through this project. A total of 2,700 farmers (45% female) provide cocoa beans to Pink Foods to process into Uganda’s first locally produced chocolate.

Our training and mentoring programme in governance and access to finance has provided Pink Foods with training in record keeping, risk management and strategic business development. They have developed new policies and manuals including a Strategic Plan and increased their sustainability and financial capacity to ensure their business can continue to grow and provide a livelihood for cocoa farmers in the surrounding communities.
