PROJECT BACKGROUND

Beekeeping generates additional income by producing honey and other by-products, contributing to crop pollination and biodiversity protection, thereby increasing cocoa farm yields.

By combining these two agricultural activities, this project will re-engage young cocoa farmers, improve producers’ living conditions and promote sustainable and environmentally friendly farming practices.

This project is delivered in partnership with RICE and cocoa co-operative CAYAT, with funding from the Chocolonely Foundation.

PROJECT AIMS

  1. 150 young farmers have established their own apiary and honey production enterprise, producing 9,000 litres each year
  2. 150 farmers have increased their cocoa production and income from sales by an average of 20% due to enhanced pollination from bees and increased biodiversity through integration of flowering trees
  3. 150 young farmers have improved their financial resilience through increasing their annual income by over EUR 250 from the sale of honey and other by-products and increased participation in saving groups
  4. 150 young farmers have increased their community and co-operative level participation through engagement in radio broadcasts and honey trade fairs reaching over 3,000 listeners
