Project Details

Based in Rwanda, this 15-month project will directly benefit 700 small coffee farmers by increasing climate resilience in coffee production.

Coffee farmers in Rwanda often encounter climate-related risks, high production costs and limited access to farming inputs. However, with the demand for the country’s speciality coffee increasing internationally, it is imperative to mitigate these barriers and reduce the impact of unpredictable rainfall and soil degradation. Consequently, the long-term viability of Rwanda’s coffee industry will continue to develop from strength to strength.

This project partners with Simbi, a Rwandan coffee co-operative focusing on sustainable community development within coffee production. Through this collaboration, the project will implement climate-smart production practices, farmer training and sustainable input systems.

These activities will be facilitated by a demonstration farm, acting as both a productive resource and a classroom for farmers to practice various farming techniques.

By developing climate-resilient farming, this project will not only increase coffee production, but also promote income stability. This will result in its beneficiaries extending beyond the 700 participants to impact their families and future generations of coffee farmers.

This project aims to:

  • Strengthen climate resilience and promote sustainable coffee production for 300 coffee farmers in Rwanda.
  • Establish a demonstration farm
  • Deliver tailored training
  • Establish an organic compost production site to support a further 400 farmers in accessing affordable organic fertiliser and increase organic coffee production.
