Project Details

Burkina Faso’s susceptibility to climate variation, with conditions ranging from droughts to land degradation, is perpetuating a vicious cycle of poverty for the country’s most vulnerable. Since 2022, Shared Interest Foundation has been implementing soilless farming techniques to address both climate-related issues and socioeconomic inequalities in the Sahel region.

The most recent phase of the project was able to reduce the poverty levels of 75 women with disabilities. This was achieved by establishing a sustainable organic vegetable production enterprise, providing them with the skills and ability to farm independently. 92% of project participants reported that they were very satisfied with the quality of their production.

Following the success of the project, the foundation is now working with PNCE-B on its fourth phase. Three additional greenhouses will be added to improve the crop production capacity of the women. In addition, the participants will receive vegetable processing equipment. These activities help to further shift the perspective of women with disabilities from dependent to active economic contributors.

Shifting this perception will be strengthened by introducing radio and television programmes featuring  women with disabilities by showcasing their skills, achievements and contributions through soilless farming initiatives.

Aims of this project include:

  • Increase crop production for participants
  • Increase income and improve the livelihoods of women with disabilities
  • Engage participants in value addition through processing the harvested vegetables
  • Enhance participants’ skills in soilless farming and business management
  • Improve promotion, visibility, and social inclusion through media coverage.
